Acid Splash

An acid splash effect made in Unreal Engine 4 as part of a project to create one particle effect per day.
The goal was to create an effect which could be used perhaps for a sort of acid or ooze based attack, or maybe a bursting canister of waste.

A handful of cards with scrolling perturbed normals make up the ground puddles.
I added some circular “ripples” to the beginning of the effect for stylization
I painted a splash image in Krita and then used GIMP’s distance field filter to create a splash image which could be eroded over time. I also used Krita’s normal map filter to add volume, and added a faked subsurface glow.
A quick flash and shockwave at the start to sell the impact of the burst and add a neon glow.
I added a whispy vapor effect plus some heat distortion over time for the caustic nature of the acid.
I created a low-poly hemisphere in Blender and used it to make the liquid have a bubbling ooze appearance.
