Spirit Crossing: “Burning Bear” VFX

Pair of VFX created for an in-game festival event.

One effect is for the burning straw bear effigy. The flame shader first masks several scrolling noise layers against each other, then looks up a “flame color” from a ramp texture. The smoke shader works in a similar manner, but also uses a normal map to provide lighting. Another flame shader is applied to a set of mesh “shells” placed inside the wooden framework in order to fill out the effect. Sparks are also added for visual interest.

After the bear has finished burning, it becomes a smoldering ash pile. For this, I created several ribbon trail emitters with a scrolling mask shader to create a wispy effect. Additionally, the “sparks” effect is reused with the emission rate reduced.
